Day Five - August 31, 2011

Guess what my BIG news is??????? No, not that!

Read til the end to find out.

Today the headwinds weren't as ferocious as they have been in the past 2 days. I felt stronger on my bike. I've learned that it doesn't matter if I take Old Evergreen Hwy or Hwy 14, the mileage is still 10ish miles. However, it feels FASTER on Hwy 14, so that's typically the way I travel TO school. Traveling home, I take Old Evergreen Hwy to look at all the beautiful houses!

Ok, big news is coming!

Total round trip today: 22 miles
Total for the "month": 111 miles!!!!!! Yep, you read that right - ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN MILES and it's not even September yet!!!!!

Wahoo!!!!! I also found out I have another supporter, so that makes 12 supporters plus David Martin who's given me the 600-mile-for-$75 challenge! Go Deaf Teen Leadership Camp!!!!!!

Day Four - Can you say "saddle sore"?? - August 30, 2011

Ouch!!

Ride was awesome today and I remembered my towel!! In the mornings, there's a strong headwind when crossing I-205 which does not make that uphill trek very fun. Who do I need to talk to about changing that wind direction?

When I got home, I rode around my neighborhood an extra loop so I could add another mile. I don't think that's cheating. I mean, I was still riding!

Total for today: 23 miles
Total for the "month": 89 miles

Day Three - Monday, August 29, 2011

I had prepped last night for my first day back in the classroom. My bike clothes were laid out; my "work" clothes were packed. Somehow, when my alarm went off, I hit "dismiss" and not "snooze" and promptly fell asleep. Luckily, Shawn goes in to work early on Mondays so instead of being "on the road" at 6am, I was crawling out of bed at 6:15am.

On my way across I-205, I got distracted by a bird and the wind was pretty strong. I careened right into the wall which I'm sure amused more than one driver. Because I'm not yet in shape and I-205 is mostly uphill, I wasn't going that fast. I have a nice 2.5 inch scratch on my inner arm. Unfortunately, it's fading fast and won't even leave a scar. I also got a nice road-rash area on my upper thigh, unfortunately too high for anyone to see it.

I arrived in time for a quick shower (forgetting my towel - it's amazing what an extra T-shirt can be used for) and walked into my classroom on time.

And now what you have all been waiting for - the daily and monthly totals!!
Today's round trip ride - 21 miles
Total monthly mileage - 65 miles

Day Two - Aug 28

Day Two - Sunday, August 28, 2011

Today the residential students arrived and what a better way to add mileage to my total that to bike to work on a Sunday!!

So far, there are 11 people who have pledged money to DTL!! Thanks everyone!

Round trip - Home to School: 22 miles
Total for the Month: 45 miles

Day One - Aug 27

Background: September is "Bike-to-Work" month. In celebration, I am attempting to bike every day to work. As incentive, I've challenged my friends to pledge $1 for every 10 miles I ride with the money going to support Deaf Teen Leadership Camp. Since there are 21 work days in September and would yield 420 miles, I decided to start on Saturday, August 27th.

My goal is to round that 420 miles to an even 500 miles. David Martin, now immortalized through this blog has challenged me to ride 600 miles and he'll donate $75 to DTL.

Day One - Saturday, August 27, 2011
Round trip from the Rose City Rambler (our home) to the Washington School for the Deaf - 23 miles!
Total for the Month - 23 miles
